Lori Bauck, Teacher

lori and loganI met Logan in the fall of 2009 when he was a student in my chemistry class at PHUHS. He excelled in chemistry and was a pleasure to work with on a daily basis. His many special gifts included his intelligence, athletic ability, enthusiasm for his school, genuine affection for people, humor, pride in his heritage, dynamic personality, and a smile that lit up a room.

In my classroom I have a small poster Logan made me, which says “Alpha Beta Bauck,” which is a pun he and his friends created based on the chemistry Aufbau diagram. Logan and some of his classmates would yell across the courtyard or down the hall “AlphaBetaBAUUUUUUUUCK!” when they saw me. The joke never faded, as Logan and his friends were still saying it years later.

Some students ask for my cell phone number after they graduate, but with busy schedules and evolving lives, most do not call or text regularly. Logan texted me his number five minutes after I gave him mine after the graduation ceremony. Logan texted me on a regular basis, and it was great to stay in touch. Sometimes it was a simple “I miss you Bauck!” or “Love you!”

Logan told me once that I changed his life. I believe that he changed mine even more, and simply knowing him was a gift. I am thankful for the privilege of having had Logan in my life, and I feel his loss as a family member would. Logan – I love you and will never forget you as long as I live.
